Around the World with Agatha and Teresa Peschel
Author Teresa Peschel, and her husband, Bill Peschel, setting up for her talk this past Sunday.
As the sun was shining last weekend, our bookshop hosted Teresa Peschel of Peschel Press, and her presentation on International Agatha, She Watched. While the book will most likely become available next month, our readers were given a preview as to what Teresa will be presenting to the Agatha Christie Festival in Torquey, England. Having been invited across the Atlantic, due to her work in regards to watching the Agatha Christie film/movie adaptations, Teresa Peschel used the time to do a "dress" rehearsal with our audience members.
To begin, Teresa told us a little bit about the festival and what she would be doing there. She preceded to go into her presentation that took a look into the vast world of film adaptations based on Agatha Christie novels. It was interesting to see how different countries added their own cultural influences into the original plot, and altered the story line by varying degrees. Which is why she came up with the idea for categorizing them into one of six labels. For example:
Traditional and Faithful: The Russian version of the Murder of Rodger Ackroyd was extremely close to the original story Agatha Christie had written. There were a few changes made toward the end, but the overall product was as literal a transition into the movie world as it can be.
Faithful with Cultural Influences: Appointment with Death was produced in Japan, and while the names were changed to match that of the Japanese culture, the story line moves along to the beat of the original as the main actor portrays Hercule Poirot in a more comical light. Another film, Quicksand, is an adaption from India, of Cards on the Table, and demonstrates a clear social influence in the setting and other changes.
Avante Guard: There will always be that one person who makes something off the wall different, and while it is good to express new ways of presenting storylines within the filming industry, the Hungarian one takes the cake. With a voice over to talk the audience through the murder mystery, paired with silent movie clips and images in black and white, the film certainly leaves a lasting impression. Whether that impression be of a good or bad nature, is entirely up to you.

Now, that is only a highlight of what Author Teresa Peschel discussed, but it you would like to hear the whole thing in person, be sure to visit them at the Agatha Christie festival in England. Thanks again to the Peschel for giving our readers a sampling of the upcoming book, and we look forward to offering them in our store when they become available.
